Shervin Hajipour
(Sensored)

Shervin Hajipour is a singer-songwriter from Babol, in the Mazandaran province. After the death of Jina Mahsa Amini a meme was widely spread throughout social media, particularly Twitter, starting with the word “Baraye” (meaning “For the sake of…”) then followed by people's personal reasons for protesting the regime. Shervin wrote a song with each verse based on a separate tweet. The song quickly became the anthem of the protests and Shervin was arrested the day after its release. The song was immediately taken down from his Instagram account, but by then it had already acquired 40 million streams.

After his arrest, Hajipour posted that the song was regrettably being used by political groups outside Iran. Activists believe this statement may have been forced. The song was also reuploaded with a video showing achievements by the Islamic Republic.

“Baraye'' won a special category at the Grammys 2023 - Best Song for Social Change and Shervin was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by TIME magazine.
