Mehdi is an Iranian singer, musician and activist born in Ahvaz, living in Tehran. He began his professional career and in 2018, The Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance gave Mehdi an award for “Best pop album”. However, less than a year later he was banned from performing and appearing on stage and television. The reason was that he wore the uniform of workers arrested in 2017–18 labor protests in Khuzestan during a performance. He also released a video for his song “Pare Sang” (broken stone) that criticized the 1988 Iran-Iraq War.
Mehdi Yarrahi’s “Soroode Zan” (woman’s anthem) takes the form of a soroode (a revolutionary song) and was released the week after the death of Jina Mahsa Amini.
